Horizon 2020 Marie Skłodowska-Curie Innovative Training Network

Workshop 2

UCD, Dublin (Ireland), 29 August 2018
Workshop 2 2018-09-09T19:04:54+00:00

UCD hosted TRUSS Workshop on Training in Reducing Uncertainty in Structural Safety from 10:15 to 17:30 on Wednesday 29 August 2018 at the Sutherland School of Law in the Belfield campus, Dublin 4. The Workshop features talks by the 14 ERSs and the Project Coordinator, that were divided into four parts with coffee/lunch breaks in between as follows:

  • The first and third group of talks (10:10 to 10:55 and 15:10 to:15:55), chaired by Arturo Gonzalez (UCD), were focused on sensors and modeling issues as well as giving a picture of all activities by the project.
  • The second group of talks (11:30 to 12:45) was chaired by Salam Al-Sabah (Arup) and mainly dealt with reliability issues.
  • The fourth group (16:30 to 17:30) was chaired by Eugene OBrien (UCD) and presented techniques to detect damage in bridges.

In addition to all ESRs and chairs, other TRUSS participants at the Workshop included Wendy Mann (Lloyd’s Register), Joanna Buckingham (AECOM) and Parisa Beizaei (UCD).

Motivation

Insufficient maintenance/monitoring can lead to an unacceptable risk of collapse and to a tragic failure as the Morandi bridge in Genoa, Italy. An accurate assessment of the safety of a structure is a difficult task due to uncertainties associated with the aging and response of the structure, the operational and environmental loads, and their interaction. The project TRUSS (Training in Reducing Uncertainty in Structural Safety) has recruited 14 Early Stage Researchers (ESRs) to carry out research towards improving the structural assessment of buildings, energy, marine, and transport infrastructure. This research has been enhanced by an advanced program of scientific and professional training delivered via a collaboration between 6 Universities, 1 research institute, and 11 companies from 5 European countries. TRUSS workshop reports on knowledge gained in structural behaviour, structural health monitoring, damage detection, and infrastructure management that will contribute to deal with the challenges of an aging European infrastructure.

Target audience

The event was attended by a total of 220 delegates, coming from industry, academia and local and national policy makers and infrastructure managers in the area of civil engineering in Ireland.

About the TRUSS stand

Each presentation was 10 minutes long + 5 additional minutes allocated for questions. These discussions could then be continued in the TRUSS kiosk, where ESRs involved in a specific time slot would make themselves available immediately after their talk. ESRs took turns at the stand to address queries by the delegates as follows: Matteo Vagnoli and JJ Moughty (10:00 to 11:00), Antonio Barrias and Siyuan Chen (11:00 to 11:30), Barbara Heitner and Farhad Huseynov (11:30 to 12:45), Rui Teixeira and Federico Perrotta (14:00 to 15:00), Sofia Antonopoulou and Shah Nur Alam Sourav (15:00 to 16:00), Alberto Gonzalez and Daniel Martinez (16:00 to 16:30), and Giulia Milana and Guang Zou (16:30 to 17:45).

Therefore, the exhibition kiosk showcased:

  • 21 videos about the project,
  • two types of brochures, books containing papers about each of the individual research projects and about the project aims overall (book introduction), and impact magazines featuring TRUSS as example of linkage between research and industry, that were distributed for free to the attendants,
  • banner and posters (as the one shown below).
