Biography:

John Andrews gained a BSc in Mathematics and a PhD in Mechanical Engineering. Following graduation he was employed in the British Gas Research Division prior to joining the Mathematical Sciences Department at Loughborough University as a Lecturer in 1989. He was awarded a Chair in Mathematical Engineering in 2001. Following this he transferred to the Engineering Faculty at Loughborough and then subsequently moved to the University of Nottingham in 2009 to become the Royal Academy of Engineering and Network Rail Chair of Infrastructure Asset Management.

He is also Director of the Lloyd’s Register Foundation Centre for Risk and Reliability Engineering. He was the founding Editor-in-Chief of the Journal of Risk and Reliability, Part O in the Proceedings of the Institution of Mechanical Engineers and a member of the Editorial Boards for 5 other international journals. Currently also active on the Safety and Reliability Group (IMechE) and Chair of the ESRA (European Safety and Reliability Association) Technical Committee for Mathematical Models in Reliability and Safety.

At the time of start of the TRUSS project, Prof. Andrews had supervised 36 PhDs to completion, and published 3 books, 100 journal and 145 conference papers.
