Role in TRUSS: Main Supervisor (ESR2)

Area of Expertise:

Structural engineering; Finite element analysis; Automation of engineering design

Biography:

At the time of start of the TRUSS project, Dr. Salam Al-Sabah had 28 years of industrial experience in structural design. In addition he has been a regular contributor to the teaching curriculum at several internationally acclaimed civil engineering programs (at UCD since 2009). Dr. Al-Sabah’s research focuses on the automation of the structural engineering process. For his doctoral work he created and implemented new finite element approaches for the lower-bound “yield line” analysis of slabs using rotation-free elements. This work provided an innovative and cost-effective alternative to full, non-linear finite element analysis of slabs.

He has been working in the field of structural design both in Ireland and other parts of the world as an associate in Arup. Significant projects in Ireland include Project Phoenix-Diageo, the Bord Gáis Energy Theatre and the Irish presentation at Venice Architectural Biennale, 2012. Some of his work outside Ireland include the scheme design of Youngsan Tower-Seoul Korea, the structural checking of Beauharnois Bridge on Autorout 30, Canada, and many steel structures related to sustainable energy. He was shortlisted for the Irish Software Association Award-2013.
