Role in TRUSS: Academic co-supervisor (ESR5)

Area of Expertise:

Durability of reinforced concrete with particular reference to Carbonation; Alkali-silica reaction; Service life modelling and performance-based specifications; Sequestration of carbon dioxide by concrete infrastructure; Reduction of carbon footprint through enhancing the serviceability of ggbs-based products in civil engineering infrastructure

Biography:

His research interest concerns the durability of reinforced concrete structures, especially the mathematical modelling of deterioration mechanisms and the phenomenon of alkali-aggregate reaction. Currently his particular interest is the role of carbonation of concrete infrastructure in sequestration of carbon dioxide. Awards include the Engineers Ireland Smith Testimonial, President’s Teaching Award at UCD and ‘Distinction’ award from the Institute of Concrete Technology in respect of the advanced concrete technology qualification. He has served in a number of officership and directorship posts on behalf of professional organisations, including Chairman of the Structures and Construction Division of Engineers Ireland, Managing Director of Irish Concrete Society Ltd. (a voluntary learned body), Chairman of the Concrete Consultative Committee of the National Standards Authority of Ireland and Chairman of the Irish Concrete Society. He has been Head of the UCD School of Civil, Structural and Environmental Engineering since 2011. He is currently chair of the Academic Council Committee on Academic Centres and a member of the University’s Global Engagement Group.
